What medication management is

Finding the right medication and dose is rarely a single decision. It takes a careful start, clear expectations, and honest follow-up about how you feel and what side effects you notice.

Medication management is that ongoing process. We review how each medication fits your symptoms, your health, your other medications, and your goals, and we change course when something isn't working.

Who this care can help

Some people come to start medication. Others come because what they take now isn't working.

Starting medication for the first time

If you're nervous about medication, that's normal. We go slowly, and you'll know what to expect before you start.

Side effects or medication that stopped helping

If a medication causes side effects you can't live with, or it helped once and doesn't now, we look at why and what to change.

Several medications from several providers

If your medications were added over the years by different providers, a careful review can simplify the plan and check how they work together.

How I approach medication

No guessing in the dark. I weigh your history, your symptoms, past responses, side effects, and your goals. When it helps, a GeneSight cheek-swab test can show how your body may process certain medications. It does not choose the medication for us, but it can be one more piece of the picture.

Medication is one part of a broader plan that also looks at sleep, stress, and physical health.

Questions

Questions, answered.

What is psychiatric medication management?

It is the ongoing care of prescribing and monitoring medications for mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and ADHD. It includes choosing a medication with you, watching for side effects, and adjusting the dose or the medication at regular follow-up visits.

How often are medication management visits?

It depends on where you are in treatment. Visits are usually closer together when you start or change a medication, and further apart once things are stable. We set the schedule together, and you can reach the office between visits with questions.

Can a psychiatric nurse practitioner prescribe medication in California?

Yes. As a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC), I can evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe psychiatric medications in California. I work under standardized procedures with a collaborating physician, as California law requires.

What is GeneSight testing, and do I need it?

GeneSight is a cheek-swab test that may provide helpful information about how your body processes certain medications. It is not required. It can be useful when past medications caused side effects or didn't help. It does not choose the medication for us, but it can be one tool alongside your history and goals.
