Psychiatric Evaluation in Brea, CA

Where we start. A thorough, unrushed look at your history, symptoms, sleep, stress, and goals, so we're treating what's actually going on, not just what's loudest.

The short answer

A psychiatric evaluation is a full first visit that looks at your history, symptoms, sleep, stress, health, and goals. At Peaceful Presence, I take the time to understand how your symptoms connect, and we finish with a plan we build together. I see patients in person in Brea and by secure video across California.

  • An unrushed first visit, not a quick intake
  • Sleep, stress, and health are part of the picture
  • GeneSight or labs when they add useful information
  • You leave with a plan we build together

What a psychiatric evaluation covers

The evaluation is a conversation. I ask about what brought you in, how long it has been going on, and how it affects your work, relationships, and daily life.

We also talk about your mental health history, past treatments and medications, your physical health, sleep, energy, substance use, family history, and what you want to change. When it would help, the plan may include GeneSight testing or labs.

The goal is a clear picture of what is driving how you feel, so the plan treats the cause and not only the loudest symptom.

Who an evaluation is for

You don't need to know what's wrong before you come in. That's what the evaluation is for.

People seeking care for the first time

If you've never seen a psychiatric provider, the evaluation is a calm, clear place to start.

People who want a fresh look

If you've had a diagnosis or treatment that never quite fit, a full evaluation can look at the whole picture again.

People with several overlapping concerns

Focus, mood, sleep, and stress often tangle together. The evaluation sorts out how they connect.

How I approach the first visit

I don't rush. You'll have time to tell your story in your own words, and I'll explain what I'm thinking as we go.

It helps to bring a list of your current and past medications, any past records or test results you have, and a few notes about what you most want help with. The visit is longer than a typical follow-up. We'll tell you the expected length when you book.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911.

Questions

Questions, answered.

What happens at a psychiatric evaluation?

We talk through what brought you in, your history, past treatments, physical health, sleep, stress, and goals. I may use short questionnaires. At the end, I explain what I think is going on and we agree on a plan together, which can include medication, strategies, testing, or a referral.

How long does a psychiatric evaluation take?

The first visit is longer than a typical follow-up, because I want time to understand the whole picture. We'll tell you the expected length when you book, and you can ask on the free 15-minute call.

What should I bring to my first visit?

A list of your current and past medications and doses, any past records or test results you have, your insurance information, and a few notes about what you most want help with. For a video visit, find a private space in California with a stable connection.

Will I get a diagnosis at the first visit?

Often, yes, but not always. Sometimes the picture is clear after one visit. Sometimes it takes more information, such as past records, a rating scale, or labs. Either way, you leave with a clear next step.

Can I have a psychiatric evaluation by video?

Yes. I see patients by secure video anywhere in California, and in person at the Brea office. You must be in California at the time of the visit.
